June 13, 2024

June 13th marks International Albinism Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about albinism, promoting inclusion, and challenging discrimination against people with albinism. 2024 marks a decade since the launch of International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD), and this year's theme is “10 years of IAAD: A decade of collective progress”.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL ALBINISM AWARENESS DAY

In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring June 13th as International Albinism Awareness Day. This move aimed to recognize the struggles faced by people with albinism and promote their rights and dignity.

WHAT IS ALBINISM?

Albinism is a genetic condition that affects the production of melanin, resulting in a lack of pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. It affects approximately 1 in 18,000 people worldwide, with a higher prevalence in Africa.

CHALLENGES FACED BY PEOPLE WITH ALBINISM

- Discrimination and Stigma: Discrimination and stigma are significant barriers to inclusion, leading to social isolation and marginalization.

- Lack of Access to Education and Employment: Limited access to education and employment opportunities hinders the potential of people with albinism.

- Health Challenges: People with albinism face various health challenges, including vision loss, skin cancer, and other related conditions.

- Violence and Abuse: In some countries, people with albinism are vulnerable to violence, abduction, and abuse, often driven by superstition and myth.

PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES

According to Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism, significant strides have been made in combatting stigma, discrimination, and violence experienced by persons with albinism in the past decade. However, she also recognizes that the journey to a more equitable world for persons with albinism continues to be marred by significant challenges and difficulties.

In commemorating International Albinism Awareness Day, we celebrate the resilience, strength, and contributions made by persons with albinism to our societies, while continuing to strive for a world where dignity, equality, and human rights are fully enjoyed by all persons with albinism.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

On June 13th, events and activities are held worldwide to raise awareness and promote inclusion. These include:

- Awareness Campaigns: Awareness campaigns aim to educate the public about albinism, dispelling myths and promoting understanding.

- Advocacy Events: Advocacy events bring together policymakers, activists, and individuals with albinism to push for policy changes and legal protections.

- Cultural Events: Cultural events celebrate the diversity and talents of people with albinism, promoting inclusivity and acceptance.

Let us unite in making a difference and ensure that people with albinism are treated with dignity and respect.
