The Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has been tirelessly working towards improving the lives of individuals with albinism in Nigeria. Since its inception, the organization has undertaken numerous initiatives aimed at promoting the welfare, rights, and inclusion of people with albinism. Here is a compilation of the AAN's activities till date:
- Urged the Federal Government to implement the national policy on albinism, developed in 2012 and assented to in 2019, to address the challenges faced by persons with albinism (PWAs) in education, health, social security, and other areas.
- Conducted an advocacy visit to the House Committee on Education to push for the advancement and implementation of the national policy on Albinism.
- Organized a meeting with education officers and stakeholders to advocate for advanced policy implementation of inclusive education for PWAs.
- Developed a Blueprint on Albinism Education in Nigeria to mitigate the learning challenges faced by PWAs and create educational access.
- Established partnerships with government ministries, departments, agencies, private sector organizations, media, civil society organizations, and development partners to intervene in activities and programs that will impact the lives of PWAs.
- Conducted awareness campaigns and sensitization programs to address negative societal perceptions of Albinism and train teachers, parents, health workers, and other caregivers to understand the challenges and management of PWAs.
- Provided visual and other learning aids for PWAs through Special Needs Education Branch at federal, state, and local government levels.
- Supported school counselors and teachers in their duties of counseling and guiding students on the Albinism phenomenon in basic, secondary, and tertiary institutions.
- Trained healthcare workers and midwives on how to handle PWAs and provided basic information and essential medical services for the prevention of eye and skin health issues related to Albinism.
- Partnered with the Albino Foundation and other albinism focus groups to intervene in activities and programs to support the provision of visual, dermatological, and other aids for PWAs in communities.
- Advocated for social welfare schemes to be inclusive of PWAs to facilitate their socio-economic well-being.
The Albinism Association of Nigeria's tireless efforts have significantly improved the lives of individuals with albinism in Nigeria. As the organization continues to grow and evolve, its commitment to promoting the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of people with albinism remains unwavering.
