June 28, 2023

Today, June 13th, we join the global community in celebrating International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD). This year's theme is "Inclusion is Strength".

International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is being observed annually as a crucial platform to raise awareness about albinism, a genetic condition that affects people worldwide.

This day

is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion, acceptance and equality in the society.  It is also an occasion to celebrate the resilience of persons with albinism.

Government has crucial role to play  in promoting inclusion and protecting the rights of individuals with albinism. Through implementation of legislation and policies, government needs to ensure that persons with albinism are safeguarded against discrimination, violence, and abuse in areas such as education, healthcare, employment, and social integration.

As we mark another year, we call for the need to make life more inclusive for both children and adults with albinism. At school, children should be given equal opportunity for accessible education and learning facilities without stigmatization. Persons with albinism should be given access to employment opportunities without discrimination. Employers should create workplaces that are inclusive and accessible to persons with albinism.

it is essential to address our unique healthcare needs. Regular eye exams, access to sunscreen and proper management of visual impairments are critical for our overall well-being. Collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, researchers, and advocacy groups will contribute immensely to improving the quality of life for persons with albinism in these areas.

We appeal to the government to provide skin screening/examination facilities, most especially in government hospitals for early detection of skin cancer among persons with albinism. Prevention can be achieved by making available sunscreen and protective umbrellas.

Education and awareness campaigns also play a pivotal role in promoting inclusion and understanding. By disseminating accurate information about albinism, we can dispel misconceptions and myths. This can help create a more accepting environment where persons with albinism are treated with respect and dignity.

By embracing diversity, removing barriers and given the  opportunity,  persons with albinism can contribute to a more equitable society. Despite the challenges we face, many persons with albinism have made significant contributions to their respective fields and communities. We can do more, inclusion is strength!

Happy IAAD 2023  celebrations to us all.

Mrs Bisi Bamishe

President,
