Why persons with albinism must avoid unprotected sun.

People with albinism have very little of the skin pigment called Melanin.
As a result, they also have very little natural protection against the sun's rays.

In places like Tanzania, where the hot tropical sun beats down mercilessly, many people with albinism die between the age of 30 and 40 years from skin cancer.

Any person with albinism should avoid unprotected sun exposure at all times. The only defense against the sun is to wear hats, long-sleeved shirts and to apply high SPF sunscreen.
Taking these steps may dramatically reduce the occurrence of skin cancer.
